Sun 6-22-08 Hotel California
http://www.thefairycircle.com/audio/Sun6-22-08HotelCalifornia.wav

I was really inspired by a concert I went to in Rochester by one of Chip and my favorite jazz singers, Tierney Sutton.  Going to see her was a big surprise for me.  All I knew until I was standing in line was that Laurie was taking me to see some jazz, I didn't know who it was going to be!  When I got back to Maynard, Chip and I were listening to Boston Public Radio's show Eric in the Evening, and Tierney was his guest!  She's following me!

Here is a list of songs that I sang on the car ride home. My taste in music is all over the place, but if you haven't heard some of these, I recommend giving them a listen (come on over, I'll play them for you); they're some of my favorites!  Some day I would like to learn the words to at least a few of them, and maybe even learn to accompany myself on the ukulele!  I know my dad would be so proud if I did.  He gave me a uke, and has been on my case to learn some songs on it.

(Sorry if I've gotten some of these names wrong.)

Hotel California -Eagles
The Day Before You Came -ABBA
Scarborough Fair -Simon and Garfunkel
If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out -Cat Stevens
Moon Shadow -Cat Stevens
Sometimes -Britney Spears
Make It Do -Slim Gailard
Potato Chips -Slim Gailard
Don't Cry For Me Argentina -The Musical Evita
The Logical Song -Supertramp
Wishlist -Pearl Jam
Fine Brown Frame -Nellie Lutcher
A Chicken Ain't Nothing But A Bird -Nellie Lutcher
They All Laughed -Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong
I've Got You Under My Skin -Louis Prima
Jasmine, My Name Is Jasmine.  I'm not Barbara Goldstein Anymore -Sara (:

As you can see I like songs that tell a story.

Food

I am having a Kashi frozen meal for lunch.  I have recently discovered them, and have been eating them quite a bit lately.  They are delicious!  They have many different yummy and exotic ingredients, as well as 7 or so different whole grains per meal.  I can even recommend some of them to my Vegan friends!  Kashi also makes my favorite crackers (the Mediterranean flavor ones).  I tried their chocolate chip cookies too.  They were ok, but I'm not really a fan of non-homemade cookies.

I have also recently discovered Earth Balance buttery spread.  Vegan, no trans fats, "healthier" cholesterol, tasty and half as expensive as Smart Balance.

Good Books

Jun. 25th, 2008 | 08:48 am
mood: contemplative contemplative

The last book that I finished was The Ghost Map, The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic-and How It Changed Science, Cities, and The Modern World by Steven Johnson.  It was about how a doctor created a map to convince his fellow Victorians that cholera was being transmitted through clear water not through stench.  Most of it is written like a mystery novel, but it is based on real history.  I found it very interesting except for all the repetition and the ending, which tries to make the book into a lesson for our times (which I thought was not well founded and boring).  On the whole, I recommend this book, and it will not take you long to read.

Now I am reading "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!" Adventures of a Curious Character by Richard P. Feynman.  It is an excellent book, which I knew it would be after listening to his other book What Do You Care What Other People Think?.  They are both autobiographical, but do not delve deeply into his work in physics.  Rather, they tell about the amazing things he experienced in his life and the very personal way he had of thinking about the world around him.  So inspirational!

It is just dawning on me how much novely, non-fiction I enjoy.  Here are two other short non-fiction books that I highly recommend:

The Sky Is Falling, Understanding and Coping With Phobias, Panic, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders by Raeann Dumont

A Treasury of Royal Scandals, The Shocking True Stories of History's Wickedest, Weirdest, Most Wanton Kings, Queens, Tsars, Popes, and Emperors by Michael Farquhar

What got me onto the subject of good books was my friend ravyndamaurot's post on classic books.  Three that I picked from that list as favorites of mine are Count of Monte Cristo, Jane Eyre, and The Three Musketeers.  She picked A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson.  I have requested it from the library.

Goodbye Eyesore!

Hey, they took down a bunch of dilapidated buildings at a major intersection in Maynard today!  I was wondering if anyone was ever going to do something about that.  Maybe we will get something good in its place!  I bet Roly Poly Pony knows, she always knows.  I should check her blog tomorrow to see.  But for now, sleep!  Or I will end up as much of a bad'n tomorrow as I was today.

Thurs 6-12-08 Are Your Speakers Plugged In?

Jun. 12th, 2008 | 04:07 pm
mood: discontent discontent

Vitas, Chip and Mom, thanks for listening and commenting!  I don't mean to say that it's not worth doing this blog just for you guys.  It's just that my original intent was to reach out to friends that I don't get to talk to as much.  I'm not sure yet what is keeping people away from listening.  I thought it might be my eye, so I changed that to my FC logo.  Or it could be my voice, speaker unavailability, or me.  I have gotten a few comments from friends on what I have written (which hasn't been that much, as it is much less convenient for me), so maybe the whole audio file thing just isn't very convenient for most people.  If so, let me know.  Thanks!
